Order a Retro Root Beer Float or the ‘Best Ever’ Carrot Cake at the 4 Seasons

Need a little something sweet to go with that takeout?

The 4 Seasons is within easy walking distance of Valerie’s Asian Cuisine, and it’s a throwback diner-style restaurant serving up home cooking in generous portions. There are comfy booths and bar-height stools inside, and in the summer, it’s a great spot to share a malt or fish fry on the patio. Kids and kids-at-heart love sitting inside the brightly-colored vintage amusement ride car, an homage to the Wildwood Amusement Park, which was located in Mahtomedi, at the end of the streetcar line from St. Paul until 1932. The root beer floats are incredible and come with an extra carafe of house-made root beer for topping off your glass. They’re fizzy and fun and seriously taste like summer—even in April.

The root beer is available to-go, sealed in half-gallon ($3.35 plus tax) or gallon jugs ($6.49 plus tax) that will keep their fizz for two or three days. Order a float, malt or shake to-go, or check out the gigantic brownies, available in a sundae or plain.

The carrot cake is also a fan favorite. It’s perfectly moist—with coconut in place of traditional raisins—and smothered in cream cheese frosting. Pick up a slice or two to accompany dinner, and you’ll make friends easily, in any season.

“It’s the best ever,” says Ally Herman, who’s been an employee at 4 Seasons for four years. “It’s the only carrot cake I’ll even eat anymore!”
