Local photographer captures the calm moments after a storm.

Throughout the year, we feature some of the photos from our 2019 Lens on the Lake photo contest. This month, we asked photographer Jean Auger to tell us about “After the Storm,” which received first place in our Wildlife & Nature category.

When and where did you take the photo?
The photo was taken on June 30, 2019, on White Bear Lake in the sailboat mooring area.

What kind of camera did you use?
I used my iPhone 7.

What’s your favorite thing about the image?
I originally set out in my kayak after a storm because the colors of the sky were so intense and vivid. As I paddled around the sailboat, I noticed a heron sitting on a favorite sailboat, and then continued to paddle closer and closer taking photos. I was very quiet and calm, and the heron let me come in very close. The color saturation of the sky, the sailboat and the heron inspired me. It was literally the calm after a storm, and perhaps the heron felt the calm also.

Watch our site throughout the year for more winners and finalists from our 2019 Lens on the Lake photo contest.
