White Bear Lake native returns to the Twin Cities to star as Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon.
Professional figure skater Sydney Berrier is shining among the stars at this weekend’s new Disney on Ice: Magic in the Stars, which is set to have the most Disney characters ever featured in one show, including the on-ice debut of Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon, played by Berrier.
Berrier, who started skating at 4 years old, has gone from training at the local sports center in White Bear Lake to becoming a U.S. Figure Skating freeskate gold medalist. Some locals might have even seen her perform at an annual ice skating show in her hometown. “I enjoy the smiles I bring to other people’s faces when I skate,” Berrier says. “I want the audience to leave feeling happy and pumped.”
Berrier has traveled the world as a figure skater in Disney on Ice, noting that her favorite memory as a performer has been skating as Mulan in Spain. “I love seeing and exploring new places … During my free time, I like to go sightseeing in the city I’m in, and I am always on the lookout for big landmarks,” Berrier says.
But life on the road isn’t always easy. Berrier’s advice for frequent travelers is to: “Always pack something cozy from home, like a blanket, stuffed animal or pieces of home décor, to make wherever you are feel more like home.”
What’s next for Berrier? If she could be a professional athlete in any other field, she would want to be a professional circus performer. “I aspire to one day perform an aerial act on Disney on Ice,” Berrier says.
Disney on Ice: Magic in the Stars is coming to Target Center in Minneapolis February 9–12. Come and let the stars make this weekend shine a little brighter.
