The annual golf on ice event is cancelled, but other associated events remain scheduled.

Due to the record-breaking warm temperatures this winter, the organizers of the BEAR’ly Open Golf on Ice fundraiser announced on January 27 that the 2024 event has been cancelled. In a press release, organizers noted that while the mid-January cold snap made them cautiously optimistic, recent weather predictions dashed those hopes.

“When projections for the week of the golf event showed temperatures in the 40s to 50s, we started looking at a plan B,” event director Lisa Beecroft says. Ultimately, after exploring alternate options including moving the event back a week or changing venue, the committee ultimately decided on cancelation.

“The BEAR’ly Open has provided consistent, foundational support to the White Bear Area Food Shelf for over a decade,” executive director Perry Petersen says in the press release. “Food insecurity in our community has increased tremendously over the last two years. Visits to the food shelf are up 40 percent over last year, which was already a record high year.”

Although the golf event is no longer happening, other BEAR’ly fundraisers for the White Bear Area Food Shelf will continue on as planned. The Community Dance is scheduled from 6–11 p.m. on February 2 at the White Bear Country Inn. Attendees can look forward to free hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar featuring the signature signature “Bearlytini” cocktail and the musical stylings of 70’s–90’s cover band Ranger Things.

The Online Auction will also proceed as planned from January 31–February 3.
