Empathy is the ability to recognize and understand the feelings of others, a key to building and establishing relationships, and a necessary tool to add to our communication toolbox. Here are a few strategies to build empathy:

Listening to understand, not to reply, is difficult for many of us. To become a more empathetic communicator, practice putting yourself in another’s shoes, and look to connect with the person you’re communicating with.

We can’t always know what people are going through at any given time, so it’s critical to acknowledge experiences, and listen with intention.

When conversing with someone, it’s essential to consider your response, as it can have an impact in ways that either help or hurt.

Listening intently, responding with empathy, avoiding assumptions and allowing oneself to be vulnerable when communicating are all factors to consider when focusing on our relationships. Communicating with empathy helps us connect and build rapport with the important people in our lives.
