Picks from disability activist Tiffiny Carlson.
Writer and disability activist Tiffiny Carlson is the creator of the blog Beauty Ability and the podcast True Wheelchair Life: SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) Life Uncovered. The blog focuses on topics such as style and dating. The podcast has a broader reach, including new technology for people with SCI, sex and experimental treatment procedures.
Carlson, a White Bear Lake native, sustained a spinal cord injury at age 14 in a diving accident. “It was in the mid-nineties,” Carlson says, “and there was nowhere to go to talk to other people [with spinal cord injuries.]” She set out to change that and started Beauty Ability in 2003. “I was bored and home a lot. Now…people with spinal cord injuries have so much right at their fingers. The internet has changed everything.”
Carlson is now focused on her podcast. The first episode addressed stem cell tourism. Others include “Flying With a Wheelchair” and “Sex After SCI.”
Both the blog and podcast are well-researched and compelling, and make for good reading and listening for anyone.
Stay tuned for more on Carlson in future issues.
