Although it’s undoubtedly a sports photo, Neal Burke’s NHL Prospect isn’t your typical action shot. Featuring a young hockey player partially shrouded in shadow, Burke’s stunning play of shadow and light made this close-up portrait especially memorable.

Wandering the shores of Bald Eagle Lake, it’s not difficult to spot a wood duck or two. But Andy Townshend says that trying to capture this bird on film gets a little tricky. “You kind of have to sneak up on them,” he explains.

Gary Schafer has been known to enjoy the serenity of White Bear Lake mornings riding his bicycle. Besides his set of wheels, the most important item he brings with him on these endeavors is his Canon 7D Mark II, in the hopes of capturing a bit of this picturesque scene.

Every year we look forward to the flood of images that appear on our submission site as we launch our annual photo contest. This year was no different and we received countless beautiful photos from many talented members of our community.

Anyone who has met White Bear Lake resident Jean Sockness has probably heard her say she has a fondness for fall—the leaves changing color, the crackle of bonfires, but especially the thought of goblins lurking about as the bewitching season draws near.

“This is a good example of community events bringing us together,” remarks Jay Rendall on his photo Pumpkinmania, which won third place in the 2015 Activities and Events category.
