In the Spotlight

Next month, my son Dylan will be a junior at the University of Missouri, where he is studying broadcast journalism. He hopes to spend his career in front of a camera, but early on, it was the stage that held his heart. He spent a good deal of time playing hockey, soccer, baseball, football and took many years of karate lessons, but never once did I see a passion, a ‘fire in the belly’ for an activity; that is, until he started acting. In the sixth grade, he was cast as co-lead in his classroom production of A Child’s Day in Rome.

An Astronaut and a World-Record Sundae

Each and every day, I am inspired by the people in the communities we cover, and all of the great things they do to make our corner of the world a better place to live. But this week’s events show just how far-reaching and, well, out of this world their actions are.                         First, Josh Cassada, who graduated from White Bear Lake High School in 1991, was chosen to be one of eight astronaut candidates who will help lead the first human mission to an asteroid – an asteroid! And, as if visiting an asteroid won’t be cool enough, Mars is also on the docket for a future mission.

Songbird

Katy Vernon, White Bear Lake singer/songwriter recently profiled in White Bear Lake Magazine, has landed a gig at Manitou Station. Listen to her heartfelt lyrics and inspired instrumentals as she performs with her band on June 14 from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Interesed in learning more about this London-born songbird who has been writing songs for as long as she can remember? Darby was Adopted!!

We are happy to report that Darby, the adorable Yellow Labrador Retriever featured in our May issue, has found his forever home! White Bear Lake Magazine hit mailboxes last week and after seeing Darby’s adorable mug in the article, a wonderful couple reached out to Second Chance Animal Rescue to see if he was still available...he was! Now that really is 'a new leash on life.' Happy forever home, sweet Darby!  Read our feature on Second Chance Animal Rescue here.

Celebrate Community Media

Have you ever been curious as to how all those neat local cable shows come to fruition? Now’s your chance to take a tour of the SCC Community Media Center, check out three production studios, visit the On Location TV19 production truck, the Final Cut Pro edit suites and Master Control, and meet the hosts of your favorite shows, including the fabulous Judy Skeie-Voss from On Location. Hey, you might see yourself on television and it could spark a desire to star in and produce your own show. If so, you can sign up for production classes right on the spot.

A Touch o' Green

Don your favorite green attire and that “Kiss me I’m Irish” button you save for just this occasion, and head to Manitou Station for some traditional Irish fare, including a delicious feast of corned beef and cabbage. Wash it down with a nice pint of Guinness, and yep, you'll be dancing a jig in no time flat!
